With the Voltcraft MS 18-2, you can check voltage carrying electric lines and check whether alternating voltage is applied. This can be carried out either with direct contact or indirect. The indirect measuring can be especially helpful with insulated lines and parts. Moreover, the polarity of direct voltage sources can be determined.

The device can be used as a continuity tester for circuit track conductors, chassis earth connections, fuses, power cords, light bulbs and switches.

This tool is advertised as being a continuity tester, and when I queried the description it was thought to be incorrect; however it does test continuity using your body as the connecting lead. Very bright red LED flashes when e.g. a fuse or bulb is sound. Also checks presence of mains voltage without contact, I've ordered another 3 of these so I have one nearby wherever I am.
