What does the test and measurement range cover?

Broadly four areas: bench instruments for the lab and R&D (power supplies, oscilloscopes, bench multimeters, signal generators and electronic loads); portable meters for general electrical work (handheld multimeters, clamp meters, probes and leads); installation and safety testing (PAT testers, insulation and installation testers, voltage detectors); and specialist measurement (data logging, plus environmental instruments such as sound, gas, moisture and pH meters).

Do I need a bench or a handheld instrument?

Match it to where the work happens. Bench instruments offer the accuracy, resolution and features suited to development, repair and lab work at a fixed station. Handheld instruments trade some capability for portability and ruggedness, which is what field service, installation and maintenance need. Many workshops keep both — a bench set-up for development and handheld meters for work away from the bench.
