A proof of concept doesn't need a custom PCB. It needs to work by Friday, and it needs to convince someone to fund the real thing. That's where Seeed Studio earns its place on the bench. Built on open-source hardware, the Seeed Studio range of sensors, development boards, shields and wireless modules takes you from idea to working prototype without designing every board from scratch.
Much of the range plugs together through Grove, Seeed Studio's own connector system. Every Grove module uses the same four-pin connector, carrying digital, analogue, UART or I2C signals, so parts plug in rather than solder on. Your time goes on the firmware and the idea rather than the wiring.
Start with the controller. Our Seeed Studio development boards include the Arduino-compatible Seeeduino V4.2 and BeagleBone Green for embedded Linux projects. If you already work with an Arduino or Raspberry Pi, Seeed Studio shields add what's missing: the Grove Base Shield V2, a relay shield, a solar charger shield and Grove shields for Arduino Nano and Raspberry Pi Pico, plus GrovePi+ for Raspberry Pi.
Then decide what it needs to sense. Among our Seeed Studio sensor boards, the BME680 module reads temperature, humidity, pressure and VOC gas from a single board. The CO2 sensor uses NDIR to measure from 0 to 2000ppm, and a dust sensor picks up particles from one micron upwards. Monitoring a machine or a utility? There are electricity and water flow sensors, plus an ultrasonic ranger good for 3cm to 4m and a PIR for presence detection.
A prototype only proves something once it controls something. Seeed Studio relays switch up to 250V at 10A, with two- and four-channel SPDT versions and a two-coil latching relay that holds its state without a constant coil current. For movement, our Seeed Studio motor boards include a stepper motor driver pack and a 16-channel PWM driver for servos, alongside our wider motors and servos range. Need to talk to existing plant? RS485 and RS232 modules link your prototype to serial equipment.
Going wireless? The Seeed Studio connectivity range includes a 433MHz LoRa radio, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, NFC, and a 125kHz RFID reader with UART or Wiegand outputs for access control trials. The Wio Terminal LoRaWAN chassis pairs a LoRa-E5 module with GNSS on EU868, so a remote sensor can report its readings and its location. Building a voice-controlled product? The ReSpeaker HAT in our Seeed display and sound range adds two microphones to a Raspberry Pi.
New to the platform? Seeed Studio starter kits bundle a controller with a set of modules, and switches and cables fill the gaps. You'll find more boards in our single board computers range. When the prototype becomes a product, the connectors, cable and enclosures can come from the same basket.
Seeed Studio FAQs
What does Seeed Studio make?
Seeed Studio designs open-source hardware for prototyping and IoT: sensor modules, development boards, shields for Arduino and Raspberry Pi, wireless modules such as LoRa and RFID, and audio boards. Much of the range connects through its Grove plug-in system, so you can build and change a design without soldering.
What is the Seeed Studio Grove system?
Grove is Seeed Studio's plug-and-play module system. Every module uses a standard four-pin connector carrying power, ground and two signal lines, which can be digital, analogue, UART or I2C depending on the module. You connect sensors, relays and radios to a controller, then swap modules in and out as the design changes.
Which controllers work with Seeed Studio modules?
Most popular platforms. Use the Grove Base Shield V2 for Arduino-format boards, the Grove shields for Arduino Nano and Raspberry Pi Pico, or GrovePi+ for Raspberry Pi. The Seeeduino V4.2 and BeagleBone Green take Grove modules directly.
Do Seeed Studio modules work with 3.3V boards?
Most Grove modules run from 3.3V or 5V, so they suit both older 5V Arduino boards and modern 3.3V microcontrollers. Some I2C modules are single-voltage, though, so check the supply range on each module's datasheet before you power up.
Can you supply Seeed Studio for a pilot build?
Yes. Our team can quote for larger quantities of Seeed Studio products. Quantities beyond our stock can carry a longer lead time, so talk to us early when you're planning a pilot run or a batch of test fixtures.
