What do I need to start soldering?

Should I use leaded or lead-free solder?
Lead-free solder is the standard choice for schools and for any RoHS-compliant work, and is the safer option in a teaching environment. Leaded solder is easier to work with at lower temperatures and still used in some repair and specialist contexts. Whichever you choose, good ventilation or fume extraction matters — solder flux fumes should not be breathed in, particularly in a classroom.
